Golden Palace Sinks

Day 61

Shortly before 9am on 26 January 2010, 61 days into the ship's maiden voyage, Golden Palace struck an iceberg and sank. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 50,302 of the 163,264 people on board, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

The high casualty rate was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship did not carry enough defenders aboard.

Iceberg Casualties : 58,928 souls
